My teeth feel painful

Discomfort is quite common at the start of brace treatment and after each adjustment visit. Because we all have different pain thresholds, the degree of discomfort will vary from one person to another. Discomfort seldom lasts for more than a few days.

If you feel it necessary, take anti-inflammatory painkillers such as ibuprofen (always follow the instructions on the packet and ensure that ibuprofen does not interfere with any medical condition such as asthma or any other medication you are already taking). An alternative painkiller is paracetamol (again, always follow the instructions on the packet and ensure that paracetamol does not interfere with any medical condition or any other medication you are already taking).

It may also be helpful to limit your diet to soft, easy to chew foods. Many of the wire used in brace treatment are activated by the warmth of the mouth. Often, a cool drink will help ease the discomfort.

If you are having to take painkillers for more than a few days or you are concerned about the excessive amount of pain, contact the practice for an earlier appointment.
